CITY TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY

Event to Highlight City’s Recycling Program/
Partnership With Chamber for “Shred Day”

CENTER, Texas (January 4, 2013) – The City of Center is announcing the first annual Electronics Recycling Day to be held on Friday, January 25, 2013, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Historic Downtown Square.  People can bring old electronics devices and dispose of them for free.  Also at this time, the Shelby Beautiful Clean Committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Shred Day” where you can bring any documents or paper to be destroyed.

The City partnered with STS Recycling in Jacksonville, Texas, who will collect all electronic devices and recycle them properly.  People can bring old computers, monitors, keyboards, phones, cell phones, televisions at no charge.  Any hard drives will be cleaned to Department of Defense standards and owners may receive a certificate of completion.

“None of these items are supposed to go into a landfill,” explained Center Mayor, David Chadwick.  “Without this service, there would be no way to responsibly dispose of these devices.  Then they may eventually be disposed of some way that is not very responsible.  Now that Christmas is over, people may have bought a new computer or electronic device and this is a way for them to get rid of the old one.”  Businesses who have old computers in storage are especially encouraged to participate.

The Shelby Beautiful Clean Committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is also coordinating efforts on the same day, Friday, January 25, to have a “Shred Day”.  “We will be bringing a shred truck which will shred on-site, documents from businesses and individuals,” reported Chamber Director Pam Phelps.  “This service is also free for those who wish to participate, thanks to our event sponsors.”

The City’s recycling trailers will also be available for people to bring other recyclable materials.  “The City operates a ‘single-stream’ recycling program, which means people do not have to sort recyclable materials.  This makes it very easy for a consumer to participate in the recycling program,” illustrated Center City Manager, Chad Nehring.  “Our program takes paper, plastic, and aluminum; just place everything in the trailer and it’s sorted at the recycling plant.”

The City is also mailing out a flyer which will provide more information on the Recycling Program.
