Construction to Begin on New Streetlight at Timpson and Tenaha Streets
LUFKIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is advising motorists to use caution when traveling through the intersection of SH 87 (Tenaha Street) and Timpson Street/Porter Street as work to install a new traffic signal gets under way. Preparations for the project begin Monday, July 15, when the contractor sets the barricades.
According to TxDOT, the contractor - South Texas Illumination, LLC - will install the new traffic signal at the intersection and will also handle the traffic control. Work should begin later in the week after the warning signs are in place. The new signal will be equipped with steel poles with mast arms and the latest in audible pedestrian push buttons. Handicap ramps, crosswalks and concrete directional islands will be installed as well.
TxDOT says the upgrade will also change the way drivers move through the intersection, allowing only right turns by vehicles traveling along Porter Street. The signal is expected to improve safety at the intersection for both vehicles and pedestrians. The project should take approximately two months to complete.
Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution when traveling through the intersection as workers and equipment will be in close proximity to the roadway. Remember, traffic fines double when workers are present.
